The Covid-19 pandemic has created one of the most uncertain periods for families across the globe, and with the continuous rise of coronavirus cases in the UK – things unfortunately are still not getting any better.
Parents are being faced with the challenging decision to send their children back to school, with the virus still not under control, and now with the imminent second UK lockdown on November 5th, some parents are taking matters into their own hands and are now choosing to educate their children at home.
Can I home school my child in the UK?
The answer is yes. There are no laws that state that you can’t educate your child at home on a part-time or full-time basis.
What should I do?
If your child is currently at a school, you are required to write a letter to the headteacher to formely make your request. However if your child has SEN and attends a special school, you’ll need to get the council’s permission to educate them at home. You do not need the council’s permission if your child attends a mainstream school, even if they have an education, health and care (EHCP) plan.
What do I teach them?
Your child can be taught by yourself, a tutor or as some families have done, by forming a co-operative group of other home schooled children nearby. Now you must ensure that your child receives a full time education from the ge of 5, but you do not have to follow the Ntional Curriculm. It would be advisory to follow some of the main requiremets of the NC whilst implementing your own ideas.
